01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Step past the noren curtain into MOMOYA on the 1th floor of the Glamorous Food Building, just near the western end of Nishiki Market, and you are greeted by a relaxed dining space and the mouthwatering aroma of skewers frying to a crisp. The natural place to start is the house signature: pork belly-wrapped asparagus. An extra-large spear of fresh asparagus is neatly wrapped in savory pork belly and fried, delivering a crisp, juicy bite balanced by the rich sweetness of the pork fat.

Meticulously Prepared Kushiage and Seasonal Obanzai

The skewer menu highlights careful ingredient-specific craftsmanship, from "Angel Shrimp" fried so precisely that the head can be eaten whole, to two-color dengaku made with wheat gluten from historic Nishiki Market specialist Fuka, to chicken breast topped with a sharp touch of wasabi. Ordering the chef's choice signature skewer course allows you to enjoy skewer after skewer in a leisurely cadence, each enveloped in a light, crunchy batter. Alongside the fried skewers stands MOMOYA's other pillar: traditional Kyoto-style obanzai side dishes. Delicately seasoned dashi-infused bowls, such as mitsuba with yuba or simmered Manganji peppers with dried baby sardines, serve as gentle palate cleansers or ideal companions to a drink.

From Daytime Sets to Casual Drinks and Evening Feasts

Open continuously from 11:30, the restaurant is a versatile stop throughout the day. Lunch brings substantial options such as the Obanzai Set, combining an assortment of traditional sides with freshly fried skewers, as well as a simmered beef plate set. Guests can drop in for a casual midday drink with a cold draught beer or sake, or gather in the evening around a kushiage banquet course complete with all-you-can-drink packages. The deep interior features counter seating, standard tables, and sunken kotatsu (horigotatsu) booths. Smoking is permitted throughout the premises, making it a welcomed find for smokers.
